These records came to the Library of Virginia in transfers of court papers from Tazewell County in 2006.
Prior to 2024, the various business records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large business record for the locality.
The records in this collection were processed at different times in 2006 by Gregory Crawford. Efforts have been taken to identify chancery causes related to these business records as some of these records were used as evidence in court proceedings.

Context for Record Type: Business Records, both volumes and loose records are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These business records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safekeeping by business owners. In other cases, business records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These business records exhibit appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments. These records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debt suits, and contract disputes.
Locality History: Tazewell County was named for Henry Tazewell, United States senator from Virginia from 1794 until his death in 1799. It was formed from Wythe and Russell Counties in 1799, and parts of Logan (now in West Virginia), Russell, Wythe, and Washington Counties were added later. Its area is 522 square miles, and the county seat is Tazewell.

Historical Information: Clinch River Coal Company conducted business during the early twentienth century in Tazewell County, Virginia.
Payroll ledger, 1910-1912, of Clinch River Coal Company records the daily earnings and deductions of employees. Entries record the name of employee; the number of hours worked or tons hauled per day; the number of deductions; totals for the month; rate of pay; total earnings; deductions for purchases at company store, rent, services of company physician, insurance, coal, smithing, powder, and cash advances; total of worker's earnings; total of deductions taken from employee's pay; and balance due employee or to the company.
Historical Information: Conly T. Leedy operated a blacksmith business in Tazewell County during the late nineteenth century.
Account book, 1890, of blacksmith Conly T. Leedy that records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry includes date of transaction, type of transaction, item purchased or service rendered, amount owed or paid and form of payment. Items sold include bolts, horseshoes, and fish gigs. Services rendered include adding or removing horseshoes, sharpening tools, mending axles, and repairing wagons. Payments made by cash, credit, check, labor, and barter of items such as flour, coal, and bacon. Volume is in poor condition due to missing cover.
Historical Information: Hagy Service Garage was an automobile service and repair business that was owned by John Hagy and D. H. Webb and conducted business during the early twentieth century in the town of Tazewell, Virginia.

Historical Information: R.D. (Robert Davidson) Huffard was born in Wythe County in 1850. He studied medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and established a practice in Smyth County. In 1891, he moved to Tazewell County where he practiced until his death in 4 Novemebr 1898. The account book was used as an exhibit in the chancery suit Foote and Johnson and others versus Administrator of R.D. Huffard and others heard in the Tazewell County Circuit Court.

R.D. Huffard Physician Account Book, 1893-1901, records the accounts of individual patients including African-Americans. Each account lists dates of transactions, charges and payments for visits to patients, medication, and medical services such as setting broken bones, obstetrical surgery including abortions, and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea.
