These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from City of Norfolk under the accession number 35561.
City of Norfolk was located in Norfolk County, which is now extinct. The city took its name from the county of Norfolk, which had been named by King Charles I in 1636. Norfolk was established in 1680 by an act of assembly. It was incorporated as a borough in 1736 and a city in 1845. Norfolk was enlarged in 1906 by the annexation of the town of Berkley. Area: 53.7 square miles.
City of Norfolk (Va.) Order Books, 1761-1870 records all matters brought before the Hustings Court when it was in session. It provides a synopses of civil and criminal cases in an organized form. They can also record other matters that required court orders including deeds, naturalization records, deeds, public claims, and deeds of emancipation.
