These records came to the Library of Virginia in transfers of court papers from Fauquier County in an undated accession.
Prior to 2024, the various business records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large business record for the locality.

Context for Record Type: Business Records, both volumes and loose records, are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These business records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safe keeping by business owners. In other cases, business records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These business record exhibits appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments, these records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debt suits, and contract disputes.
Locality History: Fauquier County was named for Francis Fauquier, lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1758 to 1768. It was formed in 1759 from Prince William County. The county seat is Warrenton. Area: 649.7 square miles. Population: 55,139 (2000), 62,900 (2005 estimate.)

Scope and Content: J.W. Bailey Mill Account Book, 1897-1898, records accounts of mill's customers. It records transactions in chronological order. Information found includes date of transaction, name of customer, service rendered by the mill, and amount owed and paid. Services rendered by the mill include threshing wheat and sawing lumber. Volume also lists payments made by mill for labor. Information found includes date of payment, name of laborer, and amount paid.
Scope and Content: Bank of Upperville Ledger, 1908-1910, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each account includes date of transaction, amount debited, amount credited, and balance of account.
Historical Information: Brooke and Scott was a law partnership formed by James V. Brooke and R. Taylor Scott that practiced in Fauquier County during the nineteenth century.
Scope and Content: Brooke and Scott Ledger, 1870-1898, records the client balance due the law partnership. The client balances are listed by page number of ledgers where information was pulled. Information found includes name of client, amount owed, and date and title of suit. Volume also contains loose papers related to court cases.
Historical Information: The Depot House Hotel conducted business in Fauquier County during the mid-nineteenth century.
Scope and Content: Depot House Hotel Daily Register, 1866-1870, records in chronological order the date customer registered, name of customer, place of customer's residence, and room number.
Historical Information: Elias A. W. Hore was a merchant and farmer who resided in Stafford County, Virginia. He also served a term as sheriff of Stafford County.
Scope and Content: Elias A. W. Hore Account Book, 1871-1873, records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order, items purchased, and the amount owed and paid. Items sold by Hore included brandy, flour, fishhooks, corn, bacon, and wheat. Payments made by cash, barter such as oats and cider, or labor such as hauling goods. Volume also includes a listing of property belonging to Hore that was sold at auction. Information found in property list includes item sold, name of purchaser, and amount paid.
Scope and Content: Unidentified Business Account Book, 1881-1890, records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order and the amount owed and paid. Items sold include wheat, corn, bacon, apples, and oats. Business may be a feed and seed store.
Scope and Content: Unidentified Business Ledger C, 1887-1893, records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order and the amount owed and paid. Items sold include whiskey, tomatoes, rice, macaroni, cheese, and potatoes. Volume also includes store's controlling accounts including an expense account, a merchandise account, and an insurance account. Business may be a general store.
Scope and Content: Unidentified Business Ledger, 1911-1912, records selling of building materials such as lumber, plaster, laths, nails, and cement. It records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order and the amount owed and paid.
Scope and Content: Unidentified General Store Account Book, 1871-1875, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in the accounts includes items purchased and the amount owed and paid. Merchandise sold includes sugar, whiskey, bacon, clothing, rice, nails, butcher knives, and butter. Payments are made by cash or barter of items such as eggs, bacon, and cow hides.
Scope and Content: Unidentified General Store Daybook, 1833-1834, records transactions as they occurred on a daily basis from December 1833-March 1834. Information found in each entry includes name of customer, items purchased, and the amount owed. Merchandise sold includes socks, pen knives, shaving brushes, eggs, dry-goods, clothing, snuff, rum and scissors. This volume is missing first 142 pages. This general store may have been located at Oak Hill in Fauquier County or perhaps Oak Hill in Loudoun County.
Scope and Content: Unidentified Mercantile Business Account Book A, 1871-1887, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in the accounts includes items purchased and the amount owed and paid. Merchandise sold includes meal, brandy, bacon, seed, corn, fish, and tobacco. Also recorded are payments made by cash, barter (such as cabbage, horses, and oats) and labor. The back of the volume includes a daily log of work performed by laborers amounting to a quarter of a day, half day, or whole day. Business may be an agricultural supply store.
