Historical Information

Dorothy Swann McAuliffe, First Lady of Virginia from 2014-2018, is a graduate of The Catholic University of America with a B.A. in Political Science, and received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She married Terrence McAuliffe in 1988 and they have five children together.

Scope and Content

Records of First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, 2014-2017, consist of 20 archival boxes and are divided into 4 series. Series have been designated for Correspondence (I), Initiatives (II), Scheduling Office (III), and Subject files (IV). These records document the work of the First Lady during the gubernatorial administration of her husband, Terry McAuliffe, and were created or collected, 2014-2017, though some documents in this collection pre-date this time period.

Correspondence, 2014-2017, consists of 4 archival boxes is arranged chronologically. This series is primarily comprised of incoming correspondence, and the vast majority of the correspondence consists of notes thanking the First Lady for her appearance at events or involvement in projects. Also includes a small amount of letters of congratulations, condolences and correspondence from constituents, legislators, organizations and first ladies from other states.

Extent: 9 boxes.

Initiatives, 2014-2017, are housed in 9 archival boxes and are organized under headings for several initiatives in which the First Lady was involved. Initiatives in this series include Child Nutrition, Virginia Children's Cabinet, Executive Mansion, Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children, National Service, and Physical Evidence Recovery Kits (PERK). These records may include correspondence, agendas, aricles, background reference materials, briefings, conference materials, event files, executive orders, legislation, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, notes, plans, presentations, promotional materials, publications, reports and subject files.

Scheduling files, 2014-2017, are housed in 2 boxes and are arranged alphabetically by record type. This series includes correspondence, event files and invitations. The event files include information related to specific events that the First Lady attended and may include briefing materials, itineraries and programs. This series is incomplete and only includes records for a small amount of events that were attended by the First Lady. Event type files may also be found within other series, but there is not complete coverage of the First Lady's events in the collection. Invitations are arranged chronologically and may include notations as to whether the invitation was accepted or declined.
