Chesapeake, which is named for the Chesapeake Bay, comprises the former Norfolk County and the former city of South Norfolk. It was formed by court order on 1 January 1963 with the merger of the county and city, both of which thereby became extinct.
Chesapeake, City of/Norfolk County (Va.) Fiduciary Records, 1707-1956, include miscellaneous records filed in a local court by trustees, administrators, executors, guardians, and committees that related to the performance of their duties managing a person's estate. These records typically include the following; bonds, appraisements, audits, inventories, accounts, estate divisions, settlements, dowery records, etc. Information related to enslaved people are commonly found in these records.
This collection includes Guardians' and Orphans' Accounts; Fiduciary Bond Book; Estate Accounts and Accounts Current; Administrators' appointments and Executors' appointments; Guardians' Bonds; and Homestead papers.
