Historical Information

On 21 February 1833 the General Assembly adopted a resolution authorizing the governor to appoint an examiner of revolutionary claims. John H. Smith was appointed commissioner to examine the claims. On 21 March 1836 the General Assembly abolished the office of commissioner; he was directed to turn his papers over to the executive department.

Scope and Content

The vouchers include the names of persons to whom money was owed, the amounts, and the dates the vouchers were submitted.

Sums requested generally ranged between $30 to $40, and the overall larger sum was authorized by Commissioner John Smith.

Also includes requests for payment for Byrd Chamberlayne for his work done as a secretary and for investigating payment claims.
