In 1983 a series of mine accidents helped to trigger the consolidation of mining and mineral activities into the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. The act, which was approved April 7, 1984, brought together the divisions of mineral resources, mines and quarries, mined land reclamation, energy, and included the duties with regard to mine safety previously administered by the Department of Labor and Industry. The mission was to enhance the development and conservation of energy and mineral resources in a safe and environmentally sound manner in order to support a more productive economy in Virginia. The name of the Dept. of Mines, Minerals and Energy was changed to the Dept. of Energy effective October 1, 2021 (HB 1855, Chapter 532, approved April 7, 2021).
