The newspaper was a gift to the donor from her parents, purchased from an antique dealer. The engraving was given to the donor by Pat Thompson, a longtime docent at Montpelier. This was a retirement gift to Thompson from staff at Montpelier who purchased it from Jentz Prints in Brunswick, Maryland.

Donated by Sarah Maria Everett in 2012, during her senior year as a student at James Madison University.
In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2019. This collection was previously cataloged as SC 5047.
Sarah Maria Everett, a Juneau, Alaska resident, transferred to James Madison University in the fall of 2010 as a theater major. She researched and interpreted James Madison, often dressing as Madison for football games and other public events. Everett graduated from JMU in December 2012.
The Sarah Maria Everett Collection on James Madison, 1816, 1907, comprises a December 9, 1816 issue of the Boston Gazette and a 1907 portrait engraving of James Madison. The newspaper contains James Madison's final address as president (pg. 2).
