This is an artificially assembled collection created during the tenure of previous heads of Special Collections. Specific sources of acquisition are unknown and may include the Alumni Association.
A postcard depicting the Shenandoah Valley Pike at Vaucluse, Virginia (Frederick County) was weeded from the collection due to it not falling within Special Collections's collecting scope. It was offered to Handley Regional Library and accepted into their collection in October 2023.
The collection comprises 30 postcards (including duplicates) documenting the historic campus of James Madison University (under its previous names) and the surrounding city of Harrisonburg.
The postcards of the historic JMU campus include Madison Memorial Library, the Quad, Wilson Hall, Walter Reed Hall (now Keezell Hall), Hillcrest, various dormitories, and assorted "views."
Harrisonburg postcards feature the Village Inn, a bird's-eye view of Harrisonburg, and East Market Street.
Some postcards have been addressed and sent while the bulk are blank.
