Andrew "Andy" Kohen, Emeritus Professor of Economics, joined the James Madison University faculty in 1976 and taught until
his retirement in 2010. Outside of the economics department, Kohen taught LS 101: Freshman/First-Year Seminar, a course he
taught from 1989 to 1994, and HON 181e. Kohen received the 1986 Distinguished Teaching Award and was elected speaker of the
faculty senate for the 1995-1996 academic year. During the 1990s, Kohen was part of a group of faculty members who expressed
criticism of the JMU administration for decisions related to academic restructuring as well as a myriad of other issues.

Kohen's teaching materials and course readings for LS 101 and HON 181 are included. Additionally, the collection thoroughly
documents the decision by the administration, at the recommendation of Ronald Carrier, to withdraw support for LS 101: First-Year
Seminar which occurred on January 13, 1994. The activities of Faculty Senate, Faculty for Responsible Change, and the Committee
to Revise and Update the Faculty Handbook are documented.
