The items in this collection were accumulated and created by Ruth Serpell while a student at State Female Normal School. In
2009, Martha S. Coffman, a descendant of Ruth Serpell, donated this collection to the Longwood University Department of Alumni
Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
Ruth Serpell of Farmville, Virginia was born in 1897 to George M. and Almeda B. Serpell. In 1911, she enrolled in then-State
Female Normal School and earned her diploma in 1917. While a student at State Female Normal School, she was a member of the
Athenian Literary Society and the Champion Tennis Club. Serpell's father, George M. was at one time the owner of Farmville's
Prince Edward Hotel.
