Biographical / Historical

Michael Bednar, FAIA, is a Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. Bednar started his teaching career at the University as an Assistant Professor of Architecture in 1972 and has since advanced to Associate Professor of Architecture (1975-2007), Professor of Architecture (2007-2009), and Professor Emeritus of Architecture (2009-present). Bednar has also served the UVA community in numerous ways as Co-Chairman, Division of Architecture, January 1976-June 1981, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, January 1992-1995, Acting Associate Dean for Students, Spring 2006, and Director of Undergraduate Advising, 2007-2009.

Content Description

This addition to RG 7 (School of Architecture/Student Papers) contains the teaching files and student materials of Michael Bednar, Professor Emeritus of Architecture for the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. These teaching files contain information for ARCH 201, 301, 302, 401, 402, and PLAN 563, and are comprised of course rosters, syllabi, instructional materials, project descriptions and criteria, class activities, student work, correspondence, notes, photographs, and 35mm slides.

Boxes 1-7 contain teaching files for the semester courses organized by the following years: Box 1, ca. 1972-1989; Box 2, ca. 1990-2006; Box 3, ca. 2007-2008; Box 4, ca. 1998-2011; Box 5, ca. 1970s-1980s; Box 6 RESTRICTED, ca. 1973-1999; Box 7 RESTRICTED, ca. 1990-2006

Box 5 also contains a Programming and Feasibility Study on the Mount Vernon Plantation by the School of Architecture, dated 1979-1980.

There are 13 CD's that contain student projects are protected by FERPA and are also restricted.

Arrangement

The teaching files (courses) are arranged chronologically in seven boxes. Boxes 1-5 contain courses ARCH 201, 301, 302, 401, 402, and PLAN 563. Box 4 only contains teaching files for the course Arch/Plan 563. Boxes 6-7 are restricted due to student grades, evaluations, and comments that fall under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
