Biographical Note

Gabriele Schmidt-Heins (1949-), is a conceptual artist from Hamburg, Germany, known for her collaborative work with her twin sister, Barbara. She was born in Rellingen, to the photographer Hildi Schmidt Heins. The sisters studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts from 1968 to 1974. Since 1974, they have worked as artists, creating works together and alone. Their work has ranged from book arts to sculpture and they have had their work exhibited in Paris, San Francisco, Berlin, Frankfurt, and their native Hamburg, among other cities. Gabriele has had solo exhibitions in Dusseldorf and Hamburg and has public art installations in Hamburg and Rockville, Maryland.

Content Description

This collection contains one bookwork by Gabriele Schmidt-Hein. This bookwork contains seventy-three pages painted or otherwise stained by Gabriele. Some pages are intentionally torn or cut out. One page is intentionally torn and mended with tape.Much of the book contains bold shapes and compositions that gradually become subtler manipulation of the pages. Gabriele Schmidt-Heins's signature appears on the back cover, and "Nov 75" is handwritten in the bottom corner.
