Biographical Note

Rebecca Fuller McGinness, 1892-2000, lived in Charlottesville, Virginia for 107 years. Rebecca McGinness was born and raised in the same house on Fifth St. and Dice with her brother and sister. Her father was a carpenter and her mother took in laundry from UVA students. She married at the age of 23 and taught at the Jefferson School from 1915 until 1960.

She witnessed the town changes including the demolition of many neighborhoods and the addition of more schools and hospitals. She was known as a "bureau of information" as well as being loved for her kindness, moral principles, and her involvement in the First Baptist Church. She was honored by Hampton University with a degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
