Barbara Abernathy is a lifelong resident of the Carver area and has been the president of the Carver Area Civic Improvement
League for the past 20 years. She attended Maggie Walker High School and received leadership training at the Friends Association
of Richmond and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. In 1998 she was named the Richmond redevelopment and Housing Authority volunteer
of the year.
Ms. Abernathy's personal files includes her notes on Carver Area Civic Improvement League (CACIL) meetings and drafts of speeches
she has given. CACIL minutes, by-laws, and membership information such as membership applications and attendance records from
meetings are also included. Information relating to Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Neighborhoods in Bloom,
and the Carver-VCU partnership make up the bulk of the collection. There are also newspaper clippings and correspondence mostly
from Ms. Abernathy to Carver residents and city officials. Most of the letters addressed to Ms. Abernathy relate to the Carver-VCU
partnership.
