Dr. Shelton H. Short III was born in Chase City, Virginia. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1948 and later received his doctorate from the University of Virginia. He has published internationally and for a time taught at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In 1972, Dr. Short was chosen as the Patrick Henry Scholar-in-Residence at Hampden-Sydney. He also designed and presented a new flag for the College's Bicentennial celebration in 1976.
The Short Collection is comprised of his notes and diary detailing his 1972 visit to Hampden-Sydney College and a collection of publications by or about Dr. Short. The collection covers the years 1965 to 1976.
The collection is housed in a single document box. Due to the small size of the collection, the original organization of the material has been maintained.
