Murray Forbes Taylor was born near Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 24, 1843 to John R. Taylor and Bessie Forbes. He entered VMI in the Fall of 1860, but his education was interrupted by the beginning of the Civil War.
Taylor served as a cadet drillmaster for Confederate recruits, and later joined the 13th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was an aide-de-camp to General A. P. Hill and General James Longstreet. Following the War he was a rancher in California. He married his cousin, Butler Brayne Thornton and the couple had three daughters. Taylor died near Fredericksburg, Virginia on November 20, 1909.
This collection consists of an account book owned by Murray F. Taylor. This book contains a list of school expenses incurred while he was a cadet at VMI from 1860 to 1861.
