Joseph Reid Anderson, Jr. was born in 1851 in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from VMI in 1870, and had a lifelong association with VMI as a faculty member, Alumni Association president, and official "historiographer." He also was an iron manufacturer and farmer in Lee, Goochland County, Virginia. Anderson died in 1930.
The Joseph R. Anderson, Jr. papers consist of drafts and related correspondence for a three part, largely unpublished, work entitled "A Complete History of the Virginia Military Institute, 1839-1924." One part was eventually published as "VMI in the World War." Also included are VMI-related notes and papers.
