Withers Alexander Burress was born in 1894 in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated VMI in 1914. From 1916 to 1954 he was a United States Army officer. He commanded the 100th Infantry Division and was the Commanding General, First Army. Burress died in 1977 in Arlington, Virginia.
The Withers A. Burress papers consist of papers that document Burress' United States Army career for the period from 1942 to 1954. Included are photos, a subject file on the 100th Infantry Division, scrapbooks, correspondence, orders, and memos. Other items include retirement correspondence (dated 1957-1971).
