John Stephens Illig was born in 1825 in Germany. He was a musician and immigrated to the United States in 1853. He served in United States Army bands until the outbreak of Civil War when he became a member of the Confederate States of America, 1st Virginia Regiment band. Illig was a member of the VMI band from 1869 to 1899. He died in 1903 in Lexington, Virginia.
This collection consists of one scrapbook fragment compiled by musician John S. Illig (approximately 20 items). The scrapbook documents Illig's life, including a passport and other items dating from his years in Germany, a certificate of citzenship, United States Army discharge papers, and other biographical material.
