Francis Lee Smith (1808-1877) was a prominent lawyer in Alexandria, Virginia. His son, Francis Lee Smith, Jr. (1845-1916) graduated VMI in 1867 and was a New Market cadet. His other son, Clifton H Smith (1841-1902), attended VMI from 1857 to 1858.
The Francis L. Smith family papers consist of the personal papers (five items) of the family of Smith, a prominent lawyer in Alexandria, Virginia. Items relating to his son Francis L. Smith, Jr. (VMI Class of 1867) include: An oath of allegiance verification (dated May 22, 1865), Amelia Court House, Virginia A letter with enclosure (dated 1867) from VMI Treasurer Robert H. Campbell that concerns the collection of a bill A telegram to Fitzhugh Lee (dated 1887) The papers also include an account book that lists cash receipts for Francis L. Smith (1859) and the VMI expenses of Clifton H. Smith (Class of 1861) who attended VMI from 1857 to 1858.
