Cary Charles Cocke (1814-1888) was a physician. His son, John Hartwell Cocke was born in 1847 in Bremo Bluff, Virginia. John H. Cocke graduated VMI in 1868 and went on to become a farmer. John died in 1920.
This collection consists of three letters (dated 1863-1864) written by Cary C. Cocke to Fayette Jones and Harrison B. Tomlin. Topics include mutual friends (Josh Jones' family) who were forced to leave their home in Norfolk, Virginia, and other news of wartime civilian life. The letter dated December 22, 1864 contains references to Cocke's sonm John H. Cocke, a VMI cadet.
