Benjamin W. Clinedinst papers, 1905-1931. MS 0242. VMI Archives, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia.
Benjamin W. Clinedinst was born in 1859 in Woodstock, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1880 and went on to become an artist. He died in 1931 in Pawling, New York.
The Benjamin W. Clinedinst papers (approximately 60 items) consist of correspondence (dated 1905-1931) between Clinedinst and various members of the VMI administration and Alumni Association. Much of the correspondence concerns Clinedinst's New Market battle painting, which was unveiled at VMI in 1914 and hangs in VMI's Memorial Hall. The papers also include a subject file concerning the artist's painting of post-Civil War VMI faculty.
