Simeon Beauford Gibbons was born on May 25, 1833 in Page County, Virginia to Samuel Gibbons (1806-1870) and Christina Miller. He entered the third (sophomore) class at VMI on July 21, 1849 and graduated on July 4, 1852. He went on to be a civil engineer, teacher, and merchant. Gibbons served on the VMI Board of Visitors from 1859 to 1860.
During the Civil War, Gibbons was Captain of the Virginia Volunteers and Colonel of the 10th Virginia Infantry. He was killed in battle on May 8, 1862 in McDowell, Virginia.
This collections consists of a one volume notebook book that belonged to VMI Cadet Simeon B. Gibbons. The book contains notes, poetry, lists, and other writings.
