The Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company Receipts were purchased by Special Collections in 2009. The receipts had been part of a larger group of railroad-related materials compiled by a collector, then sold to a dealer (see "separated material" section).
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company Receipts commenced and was completed in March 2009.
The Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company was organized in 1899, when it acquired several plants previously owned by the Carter Coal and Coke Company in Pulaski and Wythe counties, Virginia, as well as furnaces at Roanoke, Radford, and Max Meadows, in addition to operations in other parts of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The company was forced into receivership in 1901 but emerged in 1903 and continued to operate, expanding its operations to include two rail lines and numerous coal mines.
This collection contains receipts issued to the Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company for various purchases. While many of the purchases were made from businesses in Lynchburg, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee, others originate from such cities as Kansas City, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The collection is arranged in chronological order.
