The Howard Family Collection was acquired by Special Collections and University Archives prior to 2015.
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Howard Family Collection was completed in July 2023. Additional description was completed in October 2024.
Warren Weston Howard was born to William and Rosa Weston Howard on June 18, 1889, in Hampton, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI) with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1912. Howard served in the United States Army during World War I. He graduated as Captain from the United States Army Infantry School from a National Guard program in 1926 and was appointed to First Lieutenant in the Florida National Guard in 1927. According to the 1950 census, he lived in Houston, Textas, where he was an inspector for a manufacturer of oil field tools. He was an instructor of mathematics at VPI from 1955 to 1960.
Warren Howard first married Daisy Skipper on December 3, 1921, in Washington, D.C., and they divorced in 1929 while living in Dade County, Florida. He next married Mary Louise Monfort (1896-1938) on April 24, 1931, at Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Finally, Howard married Vada Juanita Winfrey (1905-1980) in the 1940s. Vada provided meritorious serivce to the U.S. Army during World War II. The couple moved to Houston, Texas, by 1950.
Howard died on July 21, 1970, in Radford, Virginia, and is buried alongside Vada Howard in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, Virginia.

This collection contains a diploma and certificates given to Warren Weston Howard, who graduated from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute in 1912 and from the National Guard of the United States Army and of the State of Florida in the 1920s. The collection also contains a certificate to Vada Howard for her service to the United States Army in 1946 and an undated crest from Virginia Military Institute.
