Mamie Bates, full name Mary E. Smart, was born in 1838. She married Hiram Webster Bates in 1859 in Massachusetts. Hiram served in the American Civil War in the Massachusetts 32nd Infantry Regiment, he died January 30, 1905. Mary died January 5, 1919.

The letter includes updates on family, local life, and a description of Andrew Johnson. Transcription included in the collection.
