The processing, arrangement, and description of the Joseph Lonsdale Hunter Mechanical Drawing Set was completed in June 2025.
Joseph Lonsdale Hunter of Thornby Iron Works, Middlesbrough, England and Roanoke, VA married Agnes Cunningham Garber Harman of Augusta County, VA. They had a son, Joseph Ellerton Hunter, who graduated from Virginia Tech in 1907. He married Vena Young Brooke, who was a sponsor of "The Bugle" while her husband attended Virginia Tech. Their son Joseph L. Hunter graduated from Virginia Tech in 1950.
The Joseph Lonsdale Hunter Mechanical Drawing Set collection is housed in a small wooden box with a key hole. On the top of the box is a small gold plate, likely meant to be engraved but never was. Inside the box is a blue velvet lined tray that holds eight mechanical drawing tools. The lid of the box is lined with purple velvet. On the sides of the tray are two purple ribbons that lift the tray out of the box. Under the tray are two booklets, "Tables for Measuring Timber" and "Log Rule and Lumber Scale" from the Virginia Forest Service. The collection is in fair condition. The tools have some rust. There is some staining and discoloration on the velvet.
Please use caution when handling as the tools are sharp.
