Charles H. Stewart graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in 1848.
This collection contains a letter handwritten on Washington College letterhead by student Charles H. Stewart to his aunt, Rebecca K. Hunsicker. The letterhead features an engraving of the colonnade and faculty houses. Stewart notes to his aunt that the first faculty house on the right of the image is where he boards and that it is the home of Professor Calhoun. The next house is lived in by Professor Armstrong. The first house on the left is occupied by Professor Dabney, and Henry Ruffner lives in the President's house. Stewart also notes that the students go to prayer in the Chapel in the morning, to recitation "at daylight," and continue recitations until 4:00pm. Students have recreation until dark and then go to their rooms. He inquires about family and friends and mentions that B. N. Brown is the Methodist preacher in Lexington. He states that nearly "all of the people here are Presbyterians and they have a magnificent new church." The rest of his letter relates to people they know. The letter is dates January 14, 1846.
