Samuel C. Smith of Lexington, Virginia graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1858.
This collection contains the handwritten geometry examination of Samuel C. Smith dated June 7, 1858. At the time, Smith was a senior at Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. The significance of this document is that it is the earliest known documentation of the honor pledge at Washington and Lee. Smith wrote the following on his examination: "I have neither given nor received any assistance during the examination."
