This collection consists of a compilation of both primary and secondary resources on the American Civil War collected by the Rockbridge Historical Society. Tha majority of the collection is comprised of Rockbridge County and regional Virginia subjects. Included are research papers, clippings from newspapers and various publications, original imprints, war dated printed matter and manuscripts. Key subjects include General David Hunter's raid of the Shenandoah Valley and the Battle of New Market both in Virginia, Confederate Veterans organizations, and some muster/enlistment records for regional Confederate military units.
A newspaper clipping from the January 12, 1939 edition of the Rockbridge County News detailing events of General William W. Averill's December 1863 raid of West Virginia.
A printed document titled "Surgeon's Certificate of Exemption" for Confederate soldier Joseph A. Miller from a military hospital in Staunton, Virginia. Miller was exempted from service for ""odganic disease of the heart." The printed exemption is dated 1864 and signed by a number of medical officers.
A typescript document (five pages) detailing the itinerary and committee chairs onligations of a Confederate Veteran and Sons of Confederate Veterans joint meeting that was held in Lexington, Virginia in May 1939.
A crudely bound volume of printed circulars, general and special orders produced by various Confederate military offices, primarily related to soldier enrollment, conscription, and slave impressment. The volume was complied by Mortimer H. Johnson, one of the Confederate enrolling officers for Rockbridge County, Virginia during the American Civil War. The bound volume includes two small broadsides, at least two manuscript orders, and numerous hand-written notes
