John J. Alles Letter, 1898 June 16, Special Collections Research Center, Swem Library, College of William and Mary.
Two page reply to F. Wendell White giving response to White questioning the authenticity of Alles' imprisonment at Moro Castle, Havana in 1850. His account is a brief recollection of his experience and regret of his Filibustering venture under the direction of General Narcesso Lopez. Because the expedition was not sent by the Authority of the United States, none of the captives were defended. Instead they were taken prisoner by the Spanish, tried, and sentenced to death. An article that recounts Alles' recollections of the events is with his response letter.
