Collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or
confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia
Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5).
Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. If sensitive material
is found in this collection, please contact a staff member immediately. The disclosure of personally identifiable information
pertaining to a living individual may have legal consequences for which the College of William and Mary assumes no responsibility.

Nelson Marshall was a Professor of Biology at William & Mary. He received his B. S. from Rollins College, his MJ. S. from
The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He served as Dean of the College from 1949-1951,
when he resigned in protest against the hiring of a non-academic as president of William & Mary, Alvin D. Chandler, whose
hiring did not include faculty participation.
This collection is housed off-site. At least 72 hours advanced notice is required for retrieval.
This collection contains files of Nelson Marshall, while serving as Dean of the College. The Dean of the College was the
spokesperson for the needs of the faculty of Arts & Sciences. The name of the office changed to Dean of the Faculty upon the
resignation of Nelson Marshall in 1951.
