Historical Note:

A group of Richmond business and professional men organized themselves as the Virginia Association for Local Self- Government. They were opposed to the prohibition referendum of 1914. Among the leaders of the new organization were Judge George L. Christian, former president of the Virginia State Bar Association, Dr. Stuart McGuire, a noted surgeon, and Royal E. Cabell, a distinguished lawyer and a former United States Commissioner of Internal Revenue.

The Association for Local Self-Government went distributed propaganda to counter the flood of literature of the Anti-Saloon League and the W.C.T.U. Further information about this individual or organization may be available in the Special Collections Research Center Wiki: .

Scope and Contents

Printed broadsides, pamphlets and newspapers published by the Virginia Association for Local Self-Government which was against statewide prohibition.

Includes "The Trumpeter" a newspaper style publication of the Virginia Association for Local Self-Government (July-August 1914) and a July 14, 1860 address, "The American Citizen" by Hon. D. W. Voorhees of Indiana before the Liberary Societies of the University of Virginia.

A note in the accession record suggests these are duplicates of material found on another SCRC collection.
