Administrative History:

The history of soccer as a collegiate sport at the College of William and Mary began with the formation of the men's team in 1965. The women's team was organized 16 years later in 1981. Both teams strove for excellence over the decades following their formations under the helms of their respective longstanding coaches coaches. Al Albert, a 1969 graduate of the College, returned to his alma mater to coach the men's soccer team in 1971. He led the Tribe to 401 wins over the course of his 32 year career, making him the eighth coach in the history of NCAA men's soccer to achieve more than four hundred wins and only the third to do so at one school. John Daly took the position of head coach of the women's soccer team in 1987 and has since led the team to success in both regular and post season competition, earning his own 400th win in 2016. In 2004, these two longstanding coaches were recognized together by the naming, in their honor, of Albert-Daly field, where both teams have since played their home games. Many alumni of both the men's and women's teams have received awards from the NCAA or gone on to play or coach soccer professionally, including U.S. Women's National Team head coach, Jill Ellis.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains programs, newsletters, clippings, box scores, photographs, game footage and other material related to the College of William and Mary Men's and Women's Soccer teams from 1965 to 2022. Also included are clippings, photographs, and articles about local soccer camps and tournaments that were held at William and Mary. A majority of the material in the collection, including the long run of "soccer scrapbooks," pertains mainly to the Men's team between the years of 1965 and 2003 and was originally compiled by former Men's Soccer head coach, Al Albert. Five folders of paper material and two audiovisual items pertain to the Women's team. The audiovisual material in the collection is largely game footage, much of which is recorded in DVD format and pertains to contests held between 1984 and 2013. Other games and soccer-related events, held mostly during the 1970s and 1980s, are recorded in various videotape formats.
