Preferred Citation

University Archives Photograph Collection, Special Collections Research Center, William & Mary Libraries

Scope and Contents

The collection includes print and some digital photographs of campus buildings, events, activities, subjects, and individuals, including alumni, faculty and staff, administrators, and visitors to campus.

It is important to note that if looking for a specific person, such as Margaret Thatcher, to look not only for that person's name but to also look at photographs from events that person likely attended, such as Charter Day and Commencement. The same should be said for subjects, such as the College Mace. In addition to it having its own folder, it can also be seen in photographs from Convocation, Charter Day, and Commencement.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into four series. The first series is comprised of photographs of physical buildings and a couple of well-known spaces that researchers may consider along the same lines (example: Crim Dell). The second series is comprised of subjects and activities and includes photographs related to a variety of activities held on-campus as well as subjects such as specific groups. The third series is comprised of individuals. Each person's entry is marked to note their association with William & Mary. More information is available in the scope & content note at the series level. The fourth series is comprised of group images of the Board of Visitors. These photographs were given their own series because it is the only subject wherein photographs are taken every year and added to the collection.
