Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870) was a career U.S. Army officer and perhaps the most celebrated general of the Confederate forces to serve during the American Civil War. Letter, 4 May 1861, to Robert E. Lee from T. Rowland of Fairfax County, Va. desiring a commission with the Virginia forces, bearing endorsement of Lee.
