Papers, circa 1933-1943 of Doris Ann McFarland of Reedville, Virginia and later Washington, D.C. and possibly Philadelphia, Pa. Included are a diary, 1933-1934, kept while Doris McFarland was a 4th and 5th grader in the Reedville School in Reedville, Virginia; a report card for the 1933/34 school year; a photograph, circa 1940s of McFarland in Uniform, greeting cards, postcards, concert programs, ticket stubs, church fliers and news clippings. Many of the concert programs and tickets (1940s) relate to Philadelphia and an undated postcard was sent to her to an address in Washington, D.C.

The following information was provided by the seller and has not been verified: " ...Her father travels quite a bit on his boat and sometimes she is able to go with him. The lot consists of 1 diary from the years 1933 and 1934, 1 photo of her in her uniform, several theatre stubs for programs held at the Academy of Music, Germantown Theatre Guild Card from the 1943-44 season, 4th grade report card from Reedville school, 11th annual National Folk Festival program from 1944, Postcard with her address as being Washington D.C. (can't quite make out the year), Homemade Christmas Party Invite from 1943, 19 newspaper clippings mostly being cartoons from the "Grin and Bear It" series, Christmas Cards, Locust Theatre Program, 2 Pennsylvania Church Bulletins, 2 Academy of Music Programs with Don Cossack and 1 hysterical typed manuscript titled "what to do in case of an air raid" which is meant as a joke. Finally the diary which represents two years. Both years are almost full of handwritten entries. 1933 has only 46 blank days and 1934 has 61 blank days. I've taken a few excerpts to give you a better idea of the contents….. 1933 "Minstrel show postponed. Daugherty and Uncle Frank came down. Gladys Keller's body brought down…..Explored caves and places down the lot with Russell Jr. Vernon, Betty and June……Went to see Mrs. Cora Lewis about the minstrel show. President Roosevelt shot in Miami….R. Bob Diehl died out with his traps. Sewing club met. Inez Forrester sick in bed….Rainy day schedule. Fixed blouse for Adelaide. Doris Ann started secret with Russell. Finished Sinopah the Indian Boy…..Started for Norfolk. Went thru Richmond, Suffolk, Portsmouth and over the ferry. Ate at Child's Restaurant. Stayed all night at Wesley Stones…….Started for home. Went to Ocean View, Willoughby Spit, over ferry to Old Point Comfort. To Yorktown, Ferry to Gloucester Point over Tappahart (?) Bridge to home…….Played with Margery and Shirley. Robert Kilduff shot himself….Lester Overton brought word from Rodney for us to get ready for our trip thru the Valley of Va……We left on our trip of 1700 miles (this trip is not recorded)…..Excursion from Eastern shore. Grandmother came home. Had flat tire coming from the beach….Walked down road to see damage. Plenty of it. One boat is along side Frank Rice's store. High and dry. Boat rowed up to R.R……Another near hurricane. Wind and tide right high. Megill's came down scared to death. Blew in their screen porch. Played dominoes with Myrtle, Willie and Mrs. Megill…..Louise, Griffin, Charles, Lucas, Marion, Dickey, Pauline and Evelyn came over tonight. Marion and Pauline took their last typhoid serum tonight. Had our first oysters….." 1934 "Had the worst silver thaw Reedville has ever known. Tree limbs breaking off everywhere. Our trees look like they've been trimmed. Saw lightening. Thunderstorm in the night……No school again today. Could not go to Balto (I think she might mean Baltimore?) on the bus. Roads slick with ice. Circle meeting at Emily Lewisford's. Have not buried Tom Neal yet. Planning for St. Patrick's party…..Had air mail letter from daddy on the Algonquin in Texas. Doris woke with a sore throat, did not go to school today….To leave on boat for Balto tonight. Went to St. Patrick's party at Masonic Temple. Boat did not get in till 3 a.m……Had a grand trip all day on the boat. Arrived Balto 5 p.m. Went to Cousin Maggie's. Had a permanent wave put in at Mrs. Jones, 2300 block Lauretta Ave…..Spent the day downtown. Shopped. Went to Hippodrome. Saw Will Mahoney tap dance on a xylophone. Good show. Went to Century at night with daddy. Wonderful show. I've got your number was the picture…..Mr. Grimes and Willie Fallin put lightening wire round the house, pulled the well house down. Colored boy killed at colored school….Left for Crisfield on Wes William's crab boat. Doris and I sea sick. Arrived Crisfield 2 p.m. No bus or train out till tomorrow. Man came for us 8:45.……Went to Stella Scott's party on Prospect Heights. Went riding with Mr. Nock. Making Joe's red pajamas…..Daddy has left again to sail at 9 a.m. We are to leave on bus for Reedville at 1:30. Hazel was home when we arrived……went on picnic to Willie Meigell's. Convicts fencing Tiper's Hill. Took pictures……Went on our all day picnic and fishing trip on Henry Edwards boat up to the cottage at Sandy Point. Fishing poor….."
