Claudia Stevens is a musician, actor, playwright, composer, and artistic Director. She was born in Redding, California and received her AB from Vassar College (summa cum laude), an M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley (musicology), and the Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University (piano). She has held academic, conducting and performance positions at Brandeis University, Williams College, and William & Mary.
The papers of Claudia Stevens, musician, actor, performance artist, playwright, and composer, are arranged by musical theatre works in her repertoire except for Subseries 2 of Series 1, which is arranged separately and part of which was formerly known as the Carter-Sessions Papers.
The papers of Claudia Stevens include video and audio recordings, posters, flyers, brochures, programs, press coverage, newspaper clippings, correspondence, grant applications, musical and literary sketches, musical scores, librettos, scripts, a screenplay, a dissertation, books, film projection slides, photographs, artifacts, and props. Many of the scripts have notes from productions. A complete listing is underway and available in the Finding aid/inventory below. Note that the inventory is incomplete and does not yet include the most recent material received from Ms. Stevens. Additions and revisions will be made on an ongoing basis.

The Carter-Sessions Papers, Acc. 2003.51 and now Subseries 2 of Series 1 in this collection, is the correspondence of Claudia Stevens while she was preparing musical tributes to musicians and composers Elliot Carter (1908-2012) and Roger Sessions (1895-1985). The collection includes: musical scores of various artists and their ideas for the performance of their pieces, biographical material of contributing artists along with reviews of some of their work, programs from several recitals performed by Claudia Stevens in 1983 and 1984, compact disc recordings of Claudia Stevens' tribute performances, and reel-to-reel recordings of concerts.

This collection is arranged into five series.
The majority of the posters pertaining to the work, "An Evening with Madame F," are housed in a special collection devoted to that work at Boatwright Library, University of Richmond. That collection covers the period from 1989 until fall, 2006. Subsequent material about "An Evening with Madame F" have been, and will continue to be, donated to the collection at Swem Library.
The artifacts, props, and sets from Acc. 2009.601 have been pulled from this collection and have been added to the Manuscripts Artifact Collection (Mss. 1.03).
Videocassettes, audiocassettes, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, reel-to-reel tapes from this collection have been moved to the Manuscripts Audiovisual Collection (Mss. 1.04).
Papers pertaining to Stevens as a pianist and in the commissioning and advocacy of music of the second half of the twentieth century.
Scope and Contents Primarily concerns solo recitals, many of which took place at the College of William & Mary while others occurred around the United States. Included are perfomances as an undergraduate at Vassar College, in conservatory and graduate studies, at music festivals including Tanglewood, and numerous professional performances in Boston, New York, Washington, Switzerland, and throughout the United States. Some material has explanatory notes or translations when the material is not in English. Also included is material relating to Stevens' work as a choral conductor at Williams College and the University of Richmond, as well as on tour in Europe. There is also a monograph entitled "Masters and Mentors of the Piano: an account by Claudia Stevens of her piano study with major piano teachers and leading performing artists of the second half of the twentieth centery, 1966-1981," which provides background and context to this subseries. Artist teachers and musical mentors include Leon Fleisher, Leonard Shure, Arie Vardi, Aaron Copland, Malcolm Frager, Andre Watts, Gilbert Kalish, Miachel Tilson Thomas, Istvan Nadas, Martin Canin, Gunther Schuller, Louis Vosgerchian, Bernhard Abramowitsch, Barbara Shearer, David del Tredici, Charles Rosen, Joseph Silverstein, Gyorgi Ligeti, and a number of others. A digital copy is available in the W&M Digital Archive but is currently restricted to on-campus viewing only. There is also a list of Stevens' premiere performances, including dates and venues, of compositions by Shulamit Ran, Peter Lieberson, Virgil Thomson, Samuel Adler, David Diamond, Vivian Fine, Andrew Imbrie, Allen Shearer, and many others. Acc. 2013.033: Contains reel-to-reel audiotapes, audiocassette tapes, and a videocassette tape of varioius piano performances by Claudia Stevens from 1972-1990. Some of the performance venues include Harvard University, Carnegie Hall, National Public Radio, and the College of William and Mary. The accession also contains a recording of Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" in 1987, the only performance of the work at the College of William and Mary. Scope and Contents "The Poisoner on the Train" was written in 2002-2003 during a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts residency, published in Exquisite Corpse in winter, 2003-2004, and premiered at the Baltimore Theater Project September 9-19, 2004. Scope and Contents A Study of Robert Schumann's Impromptus, Op. 5: Its sources and a critical analysis of its revisions was presented as the Doctoral 'document' (1976) for the Doctor of Musical Arts at Boston University. Collection includes the libretto by Claudia Stevens and the piano- vocal score by composer Allen Shearer. Its premiere is March 25, 2016 by the East Bay Singers at California State University, East Bay, to whom the work is dedicated.

Scope and Contents The marionettes include the following: One wooden marionette that was "imagined," but not used, in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. It was created by Stevens' father, Michael Stevens (1915-2009). The marionette is wearing a black hat, and black and green felt robe with an orange collar. The marionette is approximately 23 in. tall. In fair condition with a few chips in the wood. One wooden marionette of a Man that was used in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. It was created by Stevens' father, Michael Stevens (1915-2009). The man is wearing gray wool pants, a white button-down shirt, and a red wool cap. The pole attached to the marionette is approximately 27 3/4 in. tall. The marionette itself is approximately 18 in. tall. In fair condition with the man's hands starting to crack and some wear on the man's face.One wooden marionette of a women that was used in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. It was created by Stevens' father, Michael Stevens (1915-2009). The women is wearing a red and gold oriental dress and a green wool cap. The pole attached to the marionette is approximately 31 in. tall. The marionette itself is approximately 18 in. tall. In fair condition with slight wear around the face and feet.One wooden marionette of a boy that was used in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. It was created by Stevens' father, Michael Stevens (1915-2009). The boy is wearing a red wool cap, a wool red flannel shirt with blue sleeves, and a blue and white striped pant. The pole of the marionette is approximately 24 in. long. The boy is approximately 12 in. tall. The marionette is in fair condition with wear around the face and hands as well as some minor tears on the sleeves of the shirt. The left lower leg of the boy is loose.One wooden marionette of a girl that was used in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. It was created by Stevens' father, Michael Stevens (1915-2009). The girl has light brown hair, a dress with a gold floral pattern on the top and black on the bottom of the dress. There is a patch of the same floral pattern as the top of the dress sewn into the black bottom of the dress. The girl is also wearing a black scarf. The pole attached to the marionette is approximately 25 1/2 in., while the marionette is approximately 11 in. tall. The marionette is in fair condition with wear around the face and feet, and the head is loose.One wooden marionette stand used to hold the marionettes in the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. The piece of wood contains 9 bolts that are used to hold the marionettes in place. On the side of the stand there is written in green "David '86." Approximately 11 7/8 in. x 1 1/2 in. In good condition.
Scope and Contents Four wooden holders that were used to hold the marionettes in place for the work "In the Puppeteer's Wake" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright and composer. Each of the holders contain small metal loops and strings to hold the marionette in place. There is a black leather strap attached to one of the holders. Each holder is approximately 6 in. x 8 in. They are in poor condition with several chips in the wood and the holes are starting to corrode.
Scope and Contents One tin decorative personal mirror that was used by Felice Bauer in the work "Felice to Franz" by Claudia Stevens, a musician/actor, playwright, and composer. The back of the mirror is engraved with flowers all around the back and handle of the mirror. It is also engraved on the back with "FF" or "SS". The mirror is approximately 4 in. x 4 in., while the handle is 2 in. x 2 in. The mirror is in fair condition with some corrosion and stains on the back.
