Dr. John Minson Galt was the superintendant of Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Papers, 1840-1862, of John M. Galt II concerning his work at the Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia. Includes correspondence, reports, clinical notes, medical diaries, financial papers, and printed material.
Two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings were added to the collection in 2011 and are in Box 17. The subject matter is mental health with topics such as insanity, murder, suicide and criminal behavior. Some clippings are about Eastern State Hospital (Virginia Lunatic Asylum) and other asylums. Headlines include "The Maniac and the Infant" and "Unfortunate and Melancholy Occurances." Loose papers include Doc. No. 30 "General Table of Patients in the Eastern Asylum...1844;" circular about "Virginia Lunatic Asylum at Williamsburg, Va.;" a 1860 permission slip to visit the Eastern Lunatic Asylum; 1858 letter from Butler Hospital about a lecture; book plates of mammals, fish and insects; hand drawn horse's head; a page with attached items: newspaper article on women, a bird, a hand painted drawing of a woman and a handpainted drawing of Eastern State Hospital; two pencil rubbings of plants; a note naming the publications by Galt and a partial letter with questions and answers about the activities of the insane.
