The materials in this collection were donated to Special Collections Research Center, Swem Library in batches between 1990-2006 by Earl Gregg Swem, III in memory of his father, Earl Gregg Swem, Jr.

Processing Information:

Processed by Elizaabeth Engelken in 1990. Box and folder list updated by Patricia Sanabria, SCRC staff, in November of 2011. Further processing and rehousing of the collection was completed by Nell Garver, SCRC staff, in February 2014.


Administrative History:

Earl Gregg Swem was born 1870 December 29 in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He graduated from Lafayette College (A.B. and A.M.) Swem worked as a high school instructor 1893-1900. He worked for the John Crerar Library, the Superintendent of Documents Library, the Armour Institute Library, was the chief of the cataloging division of the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, assistant Virginia State Librarian, and Librarian for the College of William and Mary. Swem compiled about forty finding lists and bibliographies, was managing editor of the William and Mary Quarterly and supervised the production of the Virginia Historical Index. He died in Louisville, Kentucky., 1965 April 14.

Scope and Contents

Papers, 1871-1984, much of which concerns the estate of Earl Gregg Swem, his wife, Lilia Slaughter Hansbrough Swem, and their family. Included in the collection are correspondence, photographs, clippings, deeds and other material. Some of the topics covered in the collection include Swem family genealogy, the construction and dedication of the Earl Gregg Swem Library, as well as correspondence and photographs of the Swem family.
