Accessioned and minimally processed by Benjamin Bromley in February 2012. Mss. Acc. 2014.026 accessioned and minimally processed by Steven Bookman, University Archives Specialist, in March 2014. Pages in the Francis Joins the WACS scrapbook which have photographs have been interleaved with acid-free paper.


Administrative History:

Colonel Bonnie "Lane" Carlson (1919-2010) was one of the first five female colonels in the United States Army. Colonel Carlson was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Guy and Mae Lane Carlson. She attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia and then the University of Missouri, where she earned a degree in journalism. After graduating college, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC). During her military career, she served as an aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo and as Helen Keller's guide during her trip to Japan. In the 1960s and 1970s, Carlson served as editor of Soldiers magazine at the Pentagon, and was promoted to colonel. She retired from the military in 1973 and passed away in 2010.

Scope and Contents

Papers, 1937-1972, of Colonel Bonnie "Lane" Carlson, originally from Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Colonel Lane Carlson was one of the first five female colonels in the United States Army. Primarily includes letters written to and from her parents throughout her life, beginning with her time at Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, various military bases, postwar Japan and West Germany. Some of the topics discussed in the letters include base life during the war, the experience of a commissioned Women's Army Corps officer, vacations, and her role as technical director in the film "Francis Joins the WAC." The collection also contains professional papers, scrapbooks, a travel diary, and photographs of Helen Keller's visit to Japan in 1948.

Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents Carlson was a prolific correspondent throughout her adult life. The bulk of the letters were written to her Parents, and concern her everyday life, education, military and work career, as well as her travels abroad. Among the main topics are: Sullins College, the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, radio stations KHMO. and KDTH, Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), basic army training, Women's Army Corps (WAC) officer school, Army hospitals, Army public relations, postwar Tokyo, Japan, the making of the Hollywood film, Francis Joins the WAC, the Journalism graduate program at Stanford University, and West Germany during the Cold War. The letters also contain information about the WAC, general commentary on political and hometown news, and humor. Also included in the series is a spoken letter to her Parents recorded on a phonograph in the 1940s (item 1).

Series 2: Printed Matter and Ephemera

Scope and Contents

This series contains press releases, memoranda, clippings, and other printed ephemera related to Carlson's military career. Included in the series is a commemorative photo book of Helen Keller's trip to Japan in 1948, along with a signature of Hellen Keller, as well as a banner from the film Francis Joins the WAC, on which Carlson served as technical director.

Series 3: Photographs and Scrapbooks

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the series consists of photographs of Carlson while stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland, Japan, and Hong Kong. Most of the photographs are from Carlson's time in the Army but also includes photographs of friends and family. In addition to photographs, the series also includes scrapbooks of Carlson while in high school as well as her time spent as technical director on the set of the film Francis Joins the WAC.
