Materials related to Dr. James Douglas Smith's work for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Smith began at Colonial Williamsburg as the Director of Exhibition Buildings in 1962, became Director Historic Area administration in 1983 or 1984, and retired in 1994. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, personal files, research materials, drafts and publications related to Colonial Williamsburg programs, exhibition buildings, and historical interpretation (especially the training of "hostesses" and "hosts"), and to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's joint graduate program with College of William and Mary in museum management, in which Dr. Smith participated.
