Biographical Information:

Richard Joseph Davis was born 7 August 1921 in Portsmouth, Va. He graduated from the William & Mary and served in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a law degree. Davis was elected mayor of Portsmouth, chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party and served as lieutenant-governor from 1982-1986. Davis has been an unsuccessful candidate for U. S. Senate and for governor.

Scope and Contents

Papers, 1975-1985, of Richard J. Davis, mayor of Portsmouth, Virginia and lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The papers pertain primarily to his administration as lieutenant governor and include correspondence with politicians and constituents, personal correspondence, campaign material, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs and a videocassette of Davis and his family discussing his years as a student at William & Mary, and his career.

Arrangement of Materials:

The collection is arranged chronologically. There is very little subject access and the names of correspondents are not listed in the inventory.
