Marguerite I. Tise papers, Special Collections Research Center, William & Mary Libraries.
Purchased from Langdon Manor Books, LLC, with the assistance of the Molly Elliot Seawell Endowment.
Marguerite I[rene] Tise was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1913. She attended school at Marion and Roanoke colleges, then taught at the Washington Secretarial School before taking a position in foreign service with the State Department. She traveled extensively for work, attending summits, conferences, and active missions from the Philippines to Paris and beyond. Tise retired to Floyd County, Virginia, where she worked as an unofficial genealogist and archivist of local history until her death in 2002.
These papers are primarily related to Marguerite I. Tise's time working as the stenographer with the Economic Survey Mission to the Philippines from July 10 through September 6, 1950. Tise's offical letter of assignment to the mission is included along with two detailed Survey member lists, the 107 page "Report to the President of the United States" the group compiled, and a three page letter Tise wrote home to her family while serving.
Other materials include an official State Department certificate designating Tise as staff of the United States delegation in Paris, and several photographs with handwritten captions. One of the photographs depicts the Foreign Ministers Conference in Geneva, and lists all member names on the back.
This collection is arranged at the file level.
