Abstract
Photocopy of a letter written from the Fort Martin area of Monongalia County by James Popenoe who had visited residents at
his birthplace in an effort to prove his birth in August 1777. Popenoe stood to inherit money based upon his age. The Popenoe
family had come to Monongalia County from Salem, New Jersey, the native home of settlers of Salem, West Virginia.
