Scope and Contents

Papers and artwork of Virginia B. Evans, a landscape painter and glassware designer of the upper Ohio Valley. She was a native of Moundsville, West Virginia who at one time headed the art department at West Liberty State College. Her art was widely exhibited regionally and nationally. Although she preferred working in a variety of styles and media, she was most noted for her rather representational landscapes and her fusion of traditional Chinese sensibilities with modern Western industrial glassware design. Collection also includes a white confirmation dress from Mount de Chantal where Evans completed a degree in art in 1914.

White confirmation dress from Mount de Chantal (On evidence of photographs and text in Mount de Chantal yearbooks dating from 1914, 1916, 1922, 1924, and 1948, this dress was likely worn at May Day pageants and distribution ceremonies; it was probably also worn at confirmations as well. Photocopies of pages from these yearbooks containing evidence are stored with the dress in an acid-free folder.)
