Scope and Contents

Records created and accumulated by West Virginia University (WVU) History Professor William Arnett, including primarily administrative records of Phi Alpha Theta, a student organization for history students at WVU. Includes two ledgers from the founding of the local Delta Nu Chapter, including minute book (1952-1964) and financial ledger (1952-1970). There is also correspondence, newsletters, bulletins, announcements, membership records, and convention records, among other Delta Nu material. Additional material includes information regarding the history of the WVU history department.

Local Phi Alpha Theta newsletters from the 1970s titled "Clio's Corner" (in box 1) were produced by the undergraduate and graduate student members of both Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club (created by W.S. Arnett in the early 1970s). They include interviews with many of the faculty members of the WVU History Department at that time, and include the artwork of student member Rose Vargo.

Other material in this collection includes:

narrative information regarding the history of the West Virginia University History Department (box 1, folders 3-5);

miscellaneous lecture notes and bibliographies by Professor Festus Summers (box 1, folders 22-24);

historical narratives by Carl B. Taylor regarding history of Cogan House Township in Pennsylvania (topics including doctors and medical care, post-elementary schooling, and reaction to news of the Armistice; box 1, folder 25);

and photographs of the West Virginia Collection (Special Collections), of West Virginia University Libraries (8 items; box 2, folder 14).

For additional Phi Alpha Theta records, see A&M 957, Phi Alpha Theta. Delta Nu Chapter.
