Abstract
Records of the McDowell County Evaluation Project. Includes working papers, miscellaneous maps of McDowell County, aerial
photographs, Universal Tranverse Mercator (UTM) field surveys, school rosters, and some personal papers of Richard Little,
the director of the McDowell County Evaluation Project. Towns or regions which have both corresponding aerial photographs
and UTM field surveys are the following: Bull Creek Hollow; Eureka; Shop Hollow or Warriormines; Bottom Creek Hollow; Greenbrier
Fork, Iaeger, John's Branch Hollow, Harmon Branch or Jenkin Jones, Bearswallow Hollow, and Asco. Areas which have only aerial
photographs are: Carswell; Coalwood; Johnnycake; Jolo; Sandy Huff; Superior Maitland; Berwind; Bradshaw or Raysal; Welch;
Caretta; and Eckman. The towns of Kyle and Maybeury have only corresponding field surveys. The field surveys indicate UTM
coordinates and the location of occupied dwellings, vacancies, churches, and other buildings. A few of the field surveys are
drawn to scale. The school rosters represent the towns of Rolfe, Coalwood, Caretta, Thorpe, Havaco, Davy, Bradshaw, Iaeger,
Vivian, Warriormine, Superior Maitland, Berwind-Katona, Maybeury, and Jenkin Jones.The papers of Richard Little include birth
and baptism certificates for his children, his marriage certificate to Jacqueline Putnam Wheeler, as well as a complete house
inventory. Also includes some correspondence regarding Little's employment. In addition to the director of the project, Little
was a West Virginia University Professor of Geology and Geography and a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy.
