Biographical / Historical

Chris Sarandon was born and raised in southern West Virginia, the son of Christopher Sarondonethes (the son shortened it to "Sarandon") and Cliffie (nee Cardiullias), who were restaurateurs in Beckley, WV. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High in 1960, Chris attended West Virginia University in Morgantown earning a degree in speech. Continuing his education on the post-graduate level, Chris received a masters degree in theater at Catholic University in Washington D.C. Sarandon would subsequently appear in roles on stage, television, and movies throughout a varied and successful career. He is best known for many outstanding performances, such as: in Dog Day Afternoon (1975) playing Al Pacino's transgender partner which earned Sarandon an academy award nomination; his role as Prince Humperdinck in the Rob Reiner's pop-culture hit, The Princess Bride ; and providing the voice for Jack Skellington in Tim Burton's holiday favorite, The Nightmare Before Christmas .

Scope and Contents

Papers of Chris Sarandon, Academy Award nominee for Best Supporting Actor, Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and star of numerous movies and television shows. This collection contains videos of the actor's filmography, a selection of scripts, and other papers from movies and television. To a lesser extent, the collection also includes correspondence to and from Chris Sarandon, notes and outlines authored by Chris Sarandon regarding scripts and script changes, and some photographic material.

The Addendum of 2025 February 19 includes asorted scripts for projects directed by and starring Sarandon, including the musicals Preludes by Dave Malloy and Nick and Nora by Arthur Laurents, Richard Maltby, Jr., and Charles Strouse; and ; the play Not Someone like Me by Susan Rice (produced/directed by Sarandon at WVU); and the script for the 2020 virtual table read of the movie The Princess Bride as a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Democratic party. Also includes voice lines from the recording of Jack Skellington's lines in the video game "Disney Dreamlight Valley" and other printed material.
